I felt very nostalgic recently on a visit to my local toy store when out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of a Radio Flyer Big Flyer, yet another of those Big Wheel Tricycles for Kids! For many of us growing up, having a Big Wheel Tricycle was almost a rite of passage. Who doesn’t remember the first time we climbed down into the adjustable seat (which is still a standard on the new one) or watched their child gleefully place themselves in the driver’s seat?

Those older “vintage” Big Wheels for Kids were great machines to go tooling around the driveway or, if you were lucky enough, you could venture down the local bumpy side walk. I was impressed when I took a look at this newer version of an old classic and it made me wish that they would have had this Radio Flyer Big Flyer when I was a kid.

The all new Radio Flyer Big Flyer

The new Radio Flyer Big Wheel Flyer has lots of features which make up a nice bridge from the past to the present. On closer inspection it still has the sturdy and hardy plastic beast of a body that I so fondly recall, but this new model is simply awesome! The front drive wheel itself has a much better ability to grip the ground, where the so-called rubber hits the road. I can remember at times that my old Big Wheel’s front wheel would often slip in certain situations to the point where I would literally be spinning the main wheel. I don’t see that happening with this newly updated gem, as it almost looks as though you could go “off-roading” with this baby (which would make it great for more grassy backyard terrain).

I also like the new handgrips on the chrome steering handle bar of this Radio Flyer Big Flyer. The original big wheel tricycle just had mold injected yoke with molded plastic handgrips, whereas the Radio Flyer has more realistic handle grips similar to big kids’ bicycles! The dashboard has some impressive looking gauges that will make any kid feel like he’s on a Harley. The rear wheels are the same plastic slicks but seem somewhat wider then I remember. To top off the whole deal is a very tall and cool flag on the back which is a must-have for safety when kids are riding on driveways, and also because you’d see these flags from a good distance. Overall, the Radio Flyer Big Flyer is one of the coolest and safest modern big wheel tricycles out there for kids.
